Basic Style for Links

Use Rich Text Box to input text preceding a link (Introduction or Comment, if any); then close Rich Text editor.
Except for links to same-page anchors, do not put Links inside a Rich Text Box because LibGuides link-checker will not test them.

When a Rich Text Box has sections, you can add a label and/or insert a line.
Dark Gray bolded text looks nice for internal labels since it matches default dark gray of box name.
Close Rich Text Box
Add Links below it.

LibGuides offers only two choices for Window Target.
Window Target:  Open in current window (default)   [Default was set in Admin.  Each instance can be set otherwise.]
Window Target:  Open in New Window   USE THIS FOR EXTERNAL WEBSITES AND DATABASES.  This is a controversial topic.
Not offered in out-of-the-box LibGuides:  Open in New Tab.  This option may be controlled by the specific browser., as explained on WWW re: target_blank.

Use Proxy?   Yes, if target is restricted to Life West students and faculty
Use Proxy?   No, if target is public

Description:  optional  (public can view, if permitted by Description Display)

Description Display:  select Hover over item title
Description Display:  select Hover over info icon (black circle with white i) only if highlighting is important and uncluttered in appearance (too many of these in a tight space is distracting)

Links to Anchors

Links to Anchors on same page

Same page links are easy to set to anchors located in Rich Text within a box. There is no danger of a broken link.
Same page links can be set to anchors located in another box by appending #anchor-name to the URL for the page.
Cuation:  Editing the friendly URL for the page will break this link.  Link Checker ignores Rich Text and will not find these broken links.

To add an anchor:

  • Typically, you would type Jump to: followed by a list of topics
  • In the box for the topic, on the line above its content, use flag icon to add and name anchor
  • Go back to the Jump to list. Select text; click Link icon
  • Same box anchor:  Link Type=Link to anchor in the text; Select anchor name from list
  • Different box anchor:  Select text; click Link icon; enter page URL#anchor-name

Currently our anchor Names and Element IDs are the same descriptive word.  [Advantages of using different Element ID is unclear to AO.]

Links to Anchors on other Guides and Pages

Add Links.   Do not insert within Rich Text because link checking will not catch broken links.

Naming Links with and without Thumbnail Images

We often need two versions of a link to a resource:

  • Link and description only --> When creating a new Link, give it a name that users will understand
  • Link and description with thumbnail (such as a logo for the resource) --> Create a new Link using same name and description, and also append (w thumbnail) to its name.

When reusing a link to the resource, it will be easy to differentiate which version to choose.  Once the reused link is inserted in the Box, edit the title so that users do not see the appended (w thumbnail).  Editing the link in a Box also allows for changing how the description displays in this instance.

Take care not to make edits to Link titles and/or descriptions inside a Box whenever the edit rightfully belongs in the original Link in Assets.  Some edits speak to the specific content of the page.  It is better to improve characteristics of the Link in Assets, to benefit subsequent reuse and consistency.

Link to Horizone using Bib number TEMPLATE

http://localhost/ipac20/ipac.jsp?index=BIB&term=764

If link goes to an online resource that requires authentication for off-campus use, you must check the Horizon record to verify that both On Campus and Off Campus URL are present.  This is a good time to test the links as well.
