Recent Life West graduates have additional benefits, as described below.

Copying Requests for material found in Life West Library collections
Library staff supports education and research, and complies with copyright law in delivering the permitted number of journal articles or amount of text from a book.  Copying requests cannot substitute for needed journal subscriptions or book purchase.  Chiropractors do well to support authors and publishers who produce and distribute relevant material on chiropractic care.

• $5 per journal article or book chapter in electronic format from Life West collections 
• Recent Life West alumni:  10 free articles or book chapters annually from our collections, during five years following graduation

Video duplications service applies only to Life West productions that are described "copying permitted" in Library's online catalog. 

• $10 per title for DVD to DVD transfer (mail order, includes untracked shipping USPS; international shipping at cost)   
• $ 5 per title for DVD to DVD transfer (local pickup)

Interlibrary Loan
Library staff accepts requests for journal articles from any health science researcher, and complies with copyright law in requesting the permitted number of journal articles or amount of text from a book. When permitted copying is exceeded, staff will inform the requestor of estimated royalty fees that would apply before placing the order.

• $10 for article supplied by a university   
   

Publisher's Royalty Fees
Library staff will notify you if your request exceeds guidelines for the number of articles from journal or the extent of content from a book permitted by copyright law and licensing agreements.    Royalty fees would apply.   You may wish to subscribe to the journal or purchase the book instead.


Literature Search
The librarian builds a search strategy to find journal articles and other materials relevant to your inquiry, and delivers a set of references for you to evaluate. Doctors typically follow up by requesting refinements to the search strategy to capture missing concepts, or to request full text of selected articles.  The librarian can also suggest a search strategy if you prefer to search on your own.

• No charge for quick searches requiring less than 30 minutes
• $15 for searches requiring > 30 minutes
• All Life West alumni:  5 free searches annually 

Training
Reference librarians teach doctors how to use research databases and formulate effective search strategies, whenever time permits.  Since demands of serving students and faculty can restrict availability, librarians may direct researchers to recommended online tutorials and handouts.

Borrowing Privileges (Library Card)
Borrowing privileges are a value only for those people who want to borrow books and audiovisuals for use outside the library.  Privileges exclude models, reserve books, and equipment.  On site use of materials is permitted inside the library for anyone studying or doing research in health sciences.

• Recent Life West alumni:  Free for five years following graduation. 
  Request renewal at the circulation desk.  Continue to use your Life West picture ID, or present a government-issued picture ID. 
• $70 annual membership fee for alumni who graduated more than five years ago, and other local researchers. 
  Overdue fines apply at the same rate charged to current students.

Delivery Methods
Copies of journal articles and book chapters are delivered as email attachments in PDF format, and by U.S. mail when required by our license. Some publishers do not permit electronic delivery. According to copyright law, the copy is for individual use only, and not for further distribution.  

When the number or size of files is large, library staff uses a third party service such as DropBox. In this case, please download materials promptly.  Copyright law does not permit long-term storage of such documents in the library's account.


Payment Methods
​Credit card is the preferred method of payment. Life Chiropractic College West accepts American Express, Discover, MasterCard, Visa.

• In order to protect privacy, doctors who provide credit card information by telephone should speak only to the librarian who is working on the request.
• On-site, we accept cash or check. 
• For alumni only, we will invoice and accept a mailed check.
• Frequent users can set up a deposit account. Receipts show the current deposit balance.
• For international payments, please contact a librarian for advice.

Tips for minimizing transactions

• Cluster your requests so that library staff is able to complete them all within a 30-day period, and charge the fees in a single transaction.    
• Establish a deposit account:  To accommodate ongoing activity, consider the convenience of paying in advance, in an amount sufficient to cover estimated expenses.  Library staff will send a statement of balance with each document delivery.  Upon request, library staff will refund remaining balance by check.
